Located on the right bank of the Rhone, the 700 year old
church in Roquemaure, France holds the relics of St. Valentine,
making it the world capital of romance each February with
La Fête du Baiser, the Festival of the Kiss.
It all began in 1868 when the village vineyards were overrun by sap-sucking pests similar to aphids, called phylloxera, and were destroyed. A wealthy villager named Maximilian Richard, concerned about the survival of his beloved village, purchased the relics of St. Valentine from Rome with the hope of reviving the village's cash crop.
Whether because of the St Valentine relics or not, the vineyards survived and over 100 years later in 1989, the Festival of the Kiss began. The festival reenacts the original arrival of St. Valentine's relics with nearly one thousand people in 19th century costumes and twenty thousand visitors overflowing the village streets. The streets are re-christened after famous French lovers and are filled with roaming musicians and street performers. Attendees attend the Valentine ball, take carriage rides, and participate in a wine fair. Visitors are love-struck by the Festival of the Kiss.
