Marble is one of the most sought after building materials in the world. It has been used throughout the ages in castles, palaces and mansions of the wealthy elite, but today it can be found on the counters and other surfaces of the average homeowner.
One of the drawbacks to marble is that because it is actually crystallized limestone; it is more porous than some other stones. This means that it is not as hard as other stones and can be more easily stained or otherwise damaged by harsh treatment. Stains are the most common damage to marble.
The simplest way to maintain your marble and keep it looking superb is to prevent stains from spills, and always use coasters under glasses, trivets under dishes and mats under items with rough bottom surfaces.
Clean your marble surfaces with the most gentle method available first, then slowly and carefully work up to more harsh methods from there if necessary. Wipe up any spills as soon as they happen to prevent staining, and dust your marble surfaces every two weeks with a dry dusting cloth, washing them occasionally with a cloth that has been moistened in a solution of warm water and mild dish washing liquid. Follow this washing by whipping the marble with a cloth damped with clean cool water and drying with a third cloth. You should avoid harsh chemical cleaners as they can actually do more damage to marble surfaces.
If you do find a stain that you just can’t remove with these gentle cleaning methods, try a poultice that has been specially developed especially for drawing a stain out of natural stone. A poultice is a non-acidic stain remover that is usually created from absorptive clay designed to remove deep-set stains. This clay mixture is mixed with distilled water to form a paste, which is then placed over the stain and allowed to dry. This drying of the poultice is what draws the stain from the stone and into the clay.
Marble surfaces can add beauty and value to your home, and when properly cared for, easily lasts a hundred years to be enjoyed by future generations.
