Candle Burning Tips

In the last couple of decades, candles have made a huge comeback in the world of home accessories.  The main reason, I believe, is that everything and more importantly everyone looks better when lit by a candle.

In spite of that, I occasionally hear from someone about how difficult it can be to get a pillar or jar candle to burn properly.  The candles in question either smoke, or burn unevenly or the wicks get buried in a puddle of melted wax.  After hearing this a few times I realized that it takes patience, and sometimes even a little planning to burn a candle properly.  With that in mind I put together a few tips to help you make the most of your candles, because let’s be honest, it can be terribly frustrating to buy a candle only to be able to burn it a couple of times.

The first basic rule for perfect burning a jar or pillar candle is this: A candle will never burn wider than it’s previous burn.  So if burning a jar candle, be certain each time you light it that you allow enough time for the candle to melt the wax the full diameter of the jar.  For a pillar, burn the candle long enough for the pool of melted wax to almost, but not quite reach the edge before extinguishing.

After first initial burn, a pillar candle should always be allowed to burn approximately one hour for every inch in diameter.  For example, a 3-inch diameter candle should be allowed to burn approximately three hours each time it is lit.

To reduce smoke and soot, before lighting you should trim the wick to ¼” in length and never allow the trimmed or burnt bits of the wick to remain in the candle.  Another tip to help reduce smoking and extend the life of your candle is to make certain it is being burned in an area that is free of drafts.  Drafts not only cause smoking and shorten candle life, but a draft can also cause the candle to melt in a lopsided manner, which can create unwanted drips in a pillar or un-melted wax in a jar.

To help candles burn longer, store your candles in the refrigerator.  This will help candles burn slower and more evenly.  Simply wrap candles in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before refrigeration to prevent the wicks from absorbing moisture.

Another part of enjoying candles is being smart and being safe.  Every year thousands of children and pets are injured by burning candles.  Always remember to keep candles out of reach of children and pets.  Never leave a candle unattended or burn a candle while sleeping, and keep candles away from bedding, linens, draperies and other combustibles.

Candlelight gives your home more depth to its atmosphere. Whether it is elegant and sophisticated or warm and cozy, following these tips will help you enjoy the most from your candles.
